Opening Night Reception

Wednesday, May 3, 2017, 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm

The 2017 New York African Film Festival (NYAFF) opens on Wednesday, May 3rd at Walter Reade Theater of Film Society of Lincoln Center. Join AFF for the 24th edition of its flagship festival marked by the theme, The Peoples’ Revolution. This year’s festival circuit taps into the pulse of protest and calls for change stirring throughout the peoples of the world – a reform charge championed by a new wave of artists throughout Africa and its diaspora.

These trends have given way to markedly distinct and playful narratives where genres mix and dialogue with the arts and non-western filmic traditions with the intention to subvert audience expectations.

For Vaya film tickets only, (tickets go on sale Thursday, April 20. A pre-sale to Film Society members will begin Tuesday, April 18), visit filmlinc.org.

Akin Omotoso, South Africa, 2016, 115min.

Three strangers on a train traveling from the coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal to Johannesburg are bound by interlocking destinies. Each appointed with their own task to complete, their separate quests intertwine in a gripping narrative about struggling for survival and holding steadfast to their integrity and dignity in a city in which they hoped to find protection and solace.
